How to apply thermoadhesive patches

How to apply thermoadhesive patches

When we start to create our patch, we can choose from various ways to apply it to our clothes. There are many ways to apply patches, as seen in our article "Various types of application for your patches", but today we want to show how quick and easy it is to apply patches when we choose the thermoadhesive backing.

Some patches and badges, in fact, can have a thermal adhesive backing or, indeed, a iron-on backing. This means that, when heated, the adhesive is activated and fuses with the fabric, fixing the patch. This method is faster than stitching, but requires the use of a heat press or an iron for application: it is a recommended finish when you want to apply the patch temporarily or as an aid to easier stitching.

The high heat required for application makes it a method that cannot be used with materials that would be ruined, such as PVC, but is extremely valid with fabrics such as embroidered patches or chenille patches, for example.

But is it difficult to apply the patch with this method? Absolutely not!
On the contrary, it is one of the most popular solutions as it allows you to apply your patches quickly and easily.

Let's see how:

1. Cleaning: Make sure you carefully clean the back of your patch to remove any residual dust or materials that could diminish its adhesion.

2. Preparation: Place the garment you want to put your patch on on a suitable, heat-resistant support: an ironing board will do.

3. Positioning: Carefully position your patch on the exact spot where you want to apply it, such as the heart side of a t-shirt.

4. Preheating: Set your iron, or press, to a temperature of about 150° and wait until it has reached temperature.

5. Iron: Now iron your patch, pressing well on the entire surface for at least 15-20 seconds.

IMPORTANT:
We always suggest, for a final application, to also add a seam along the edge.

Check that the entire surface has adhered perfectly and that there are no even slightly unglued stitches: but don't worry, in this case you will only need to iron on your patch for a few seconds at temperature.

Finished!
Your patch is now firmly applied.
